The Guardian: the Balkans on the verge of street protests
Romania and Bulgaria might face protests in the spring due to the economic crisis, the British daily the Guardian reads. Seriously affected by the economic crisis, most Eastern European countries are on the verge of social movements against the government. Several experts advance the fear that Romania could be the next country to face street protests.
Last week, violent protests were organized in Lithuania, Bulgaria and Latvia. At Vilnius protesters threw rocks in the cops right in front of the Parliament, urging the government not to push for the tax increases and revenue decreases.
In Sophia, 150 people were arrested and 30 were injured in several incidents. Over 100 people were arrested after fight streets in Riga. Several Romanian companies threaten to close up their gates, leaving thousands of unemployed and experts declare that Romania could be the next country to face riots.
