EU study: Gypsies feel least discriminated in Romania
Gypsies say they feel least discriminated in Romania, according to the „Minorities and Discrimination Poll” conducted by the European Union. The study surveyed seven EU states – Hungary, Poland, Greece, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and the Czech Republic.
In the Czech Republic, Roma ethnics reported the highest level of discrimination (64%), followed closely by gypsies in Hungary (62%). 59% of the Roma people in Poland feel discriminated, compared to 55% in Greece and 41% in Slovakia. The lowest rate of discrimination reports were in Bulgaria (26%) and Romania (25%).
23,500 immigrants and Roma locals answered the EU poll in 2008.
