Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service Director Mihai Razvan Ungureanu: from a Dacia model, the institution transformed into a Rolls Royce
Romania’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) Director, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu talks, in an interview for HotNews.ro about both the strengths and weaknesses of the institution he manages. Ungureanu declared that the Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service has reshuffled completely compared to its structure before the 1990s.
Ungureanu stressed that the institution’s main attributions are clearly delineated by the law: namely to obtain relevant information from abroad. However, the way the information is processed and is transformed in a decision is beyond the attributions of the institution, Ungureanu explained.
Former Foreign Affairs minister, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu added that the institution has every interest to have an efficient Parliamentary check in order to prove that its activity is confined within the rule of law.
Ungureanu explained that he would rather classify the institution he runs as one with a special characteristic rather than as a secret service because its attributions are not secret at all. He said that the activities of the institution he runs must reflect in the political strategies.
