Russian press: Moldavian officials revolted that Romania didn't discuss missile shield with them
The Moldovan authorities are revolted that neighbouring Romania did not discuss with them the issue of hosting American missiles for interception. Chisinau officials believes that Bucharest can become a regional security threat and could complicate the Transnistrian rehabilitation process, Vzgliad publication reads.
„Romania’s military plans worry us and we’re wondering how they will influence the regional forces relations, the security issues, the efforts of solving the crisis at [river] Nistru”, leader of the Moldavian Democratic Party Marian Lupu reacted. Chisinau’s fears have been confirmed by Tiraspol, where officials have expressed their concern on NATO’s slipping eastwards.
Ex-Moldavian president communist Vladimir Voronin declared recently that Romania’s decision to host American European missile shield elements, namely interception missiles, could turn the Republic of Moldova into a front line. Voronin, currently the Moldavian Communist Party president, declared that Romania’s position regarding the American missile shield and the open support given by the current power from Chisinau could lead to disastrous consequences for the regional security.
Ukraine is studying Romania’s decision
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently checking with experts the possible consequences of Romania’s agreement t be part of the American missile shield and how this decision will influence Ukraine and the neighbouring regions, according to Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Sergei Saenko. He added that the institution he represents aims to analyse all the aspects involved in the issue, including obtaining explanations from all involved parties. According to him, as Romania’s neighbour, we cannot overlook the plans of aerial defence system placed in the immediate vicinity of our borders, especially the elements stationed in the Black Sea”.
The diplomat added that Ukrainian state does not deny the right of each sovereign state to solve its own security issues, including actions against terrorist nuclear threats.
