UN Security Council demands immediate cease fire in Gaza
The UN Security Council adopted on Thursday night a resolution demanding an immediate cease fire in Gaza, CNN informs. The document was sustained by 14 out of the 15 Security Council members, with US abstaining.
The resolution expresses a serious concern to the humanitarian crisis and the large number of civil victims in the Gaza Strip and for those caused by Hamas rockets. The document urges for an immediate cease fire on the long term and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
British diplomacy head, David Miliband declared that peace is obtained on the fields while resolutions are written at the UN. At her turn, US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice declared that US prefers to wait until negotiations in Egypt are finished. She added that the US supports the resolution and its objectives but added that the US considers that it is more important to see the cease fire terms that are discussed in Egypt.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Gabriela Shalev declared that the Hamas attacks left Israel with no other alternatives. Meanwhile, attacks continued in the Gaza Strip. According to Al Jazeera, at least six people were killed on Thursday night after Israeli attacks in Gaza. The last toll indicates over 765 Palestinians died since the attacks started. On the other side, 13 Israeli died among which 10 soldiers.
