Democratic-liberal star candidate Teo Trandafir winner in elections for Parliament seat in Bucharest on Sunday
Democratic Liberal (PDL) candidate Teo Trandafir, well known to Romanians for her TV shows over the past decade, won the poll for a seat in the Romanian Parliament on Sunday, defeating rival candidate Liliana Minca of Social Democrats-Conservatives (PSD-PC) with 53.59% of the votes to 46.41%. Minca acknowledged Trandafir’s victory in the Sunday elections – only 14.65% of the voters in the constituency showed up to vote.
The elections took place in a constituency in Bucharest District 4, which is run by Cristian Popescu „Piedone”, a PSD-PC mayor known for his popularity. While Piedone supported candidate Minca, who could not defeat Trandafir, a TV star who had major success in the mid-2000’s.
Liliana Minca admitted defeat shortly after polls were closed but said that part of Trandafir’s success was to be shared with Adrian Sarbu – CEO of Central European Media Enteprises, a group to which major Romanian TV station Pro TV belongs. Trandafir’s fame peaked while she worked for Pro TV and has decreased fast since she left the station several years ago.
