AP: Basescu came with a special dinner present for Obama — more troops for Afghanistan

„One of the leaders hosted by Obama came with a special dinner present” at the dinner in Prague, the Czech Republic — „more troops for Afghanistan”, Associated Press comments.

Romanian President Traian Basescu announced on Thursday that the South-East European state will boost it’s the number of its troop in Afghanistan from 1,072 to 1,800.

„While the extra soldiers may not make a huge difference on the ground, the decision comes at the right time for the U.S. president.

The U.S. is committing more troops to Afghanistan to beat back a stubborn Taliban-led insurgency. At the same time, allies such as Canada and the Netherlands are looking to pull troops out of the 8-year-old war or remove them from combat duties.

Roughly 87,000 U.S. troops are in Afghanistan now, and about 100,000 are expected to be in place by late summer” AP informs.

Leaders from 11 Central and Eastern Europe have taken part at American President Barack Obama’s dinner in Prague on Thursday evening. President Barack Obama had just signed a new nuclear disarmament treaty with Russian President Dmiti Medvedev that day.
