Pensioners across the country, union members, protested this Friday, March 26, asking to be granted the rights seniors are entitled to, Romanian news agency Agerpres informs.

Over 200 pensioners rallied in front of the Government building in Bucharest, angry over the value of the pension point and by the health co-payment.

National Federations representing the retired have submitted an amendment to the Pensions law on March 10. They requested for the pension point to represent 45% of the average salary and threatened to bring 500,000 retired persons on the streets if the normative act was going to be adopted in the form drafted by the Government.

Pensioners did not only rally in front of the Victoria Palace in Bucharest, but also across the country, taking their request to the local councils.

  • 100 seniors, members of the Pensioners Free Union from Brasov (Central) have protested before the Prefecture from 9.30 to 11.30am.
  • Around 150 retired from Galati, members of five organisations for pensioners, rallied the local prefecture, asking the Government to resign.
  • Approximately 50 pensioners from Gorj protested this morning from 10am to 12pm, showing their dissatisfaction with the latest governmental decisions affecting the value of the pension point.
  • Nearly 100 people protested in front of the Prefecture in Iasi.

Over 2,000 teachers protested yesterday. They shouted their own names on the streets of Bucharest, demanding Education minister Daniel Funeriu to resign.
