Social Democratic leader Geoana urges anti-graft prosecutors to take note of cases involving President Basescu's family

The leader of Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana has urged the country’s anti-graft body, the DNA, to take note of two cases involving members of President Traian Basescu’s family. One relates to an apartment bought by President’s daughter Ioana Basescu in a residential quarter built by an investigated businessman, while a second relates to businesses run by the president’s brother.

According to Geoana, a series of high-profile arrests recently would aim at turning the public attention from issues involving the head of state. Mircea Geoana also called the Prosecutor General to explain how come a leader of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), Costel Iancu, who was investigated for proven antisocial acts, was at large pending his process, while businessman Gigi Becali, retained last week for alleged antisocial acts, was under arrest for investigations”.

Mircea Geoana’s PSD forms the coalition government with PDL, a party close to President Basescu.
