Bulgarian EU Commissioner thanks Romania for dropping border taxes

HotNews.ro

EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva of Bulgaria thanked Romania this weekend for its decision to remove a controversial tax from the Giurgiu custom point between Romania and Bulgaria.

According to Novinite.com, she sent a letter to Romanian President and prime minister thanking them for the move, shortly after she personally warned to take Romania to court of decision by local authorities in Giurgiu to apply a supplementary tax for those who crossed the border there.

In her letter Kuneva recalls she had made efforts for the six years to regulate the custom issues at Giurgiu in her quality of MP for Ruse, the Bulgarian city just across the Danube River from Giurgiu.

Kuneva believes removing the controversial tax would boost the development of local businesses, cultural exchanges and human relations between the two countries.
