Bucharest  traffic chaos prevented as taxi drivers fail to show up for strike

HotNews.ro

Over 6000 taxi drivers from across Romania were expected to arrive in Bucharest on Thursday to attend a protest in Charles de Gaulle square starting 10 am. But only 100 showed up as police representatives said the protest was suspended. Taxi drivers were expected to drive up to the Parliament Palace, which would have brought traffic in downtown Bucharest to a complete halt.

Protesters who threatened hunger strike demand a cut in fuel prices and the elimination of the first car registration tax for authorized transporters on grounds that they represent a public utility, Romanian news television Realitatea TV announces.
