Climate changes stir up a EU – Russian conflict on energy resources
Global warming problems will stir up the debates between Russia and the European Union over energy resources, a report quoted by British daily The Guardian warns. According to the newspaper, the report will be made public during a Brussels summit on energy and climate changes this week.
According to the document, European governments are warned to prepare for a new conflicting era between Russia and the West for mineral resources in the Arctic region. The seven page report, written by the EU foreign affairs representative Javier Solana and the EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero Waldner warns that global warming issues will jeopardize European security due to the fight over energy resources.
In August last year, Russia set up its flag 4,200 meters deep on the Arctic Ocean bed arguing that the mountainous chain which passes the polar region is a continuum of the Russian continental plateau. Sources argue that the Arctic region is rich in natural gas and oil resources.
