EC Spokesperson: European citizens can be expelled only individually and can attack the decision in national courts
The Justice and Internal Affairs Committee spokesperson, Michele Cercone declared in an interview for Deutsche Welle that there are no cases of European citizens being expelled in mass. She added that European citizens can be expelled for public policy, public security and public health reasons but cases are treated individually.
The French government and presidency decided in the last weeks to shut a series of illegal camps where Rroma people were staying. Some of them come from Bulgaria and Romania and French authorities decided to expell those coming from Romania and Bulgaria.
The decision to expel somebody is an extreme decision, European citizens can be expelled on an individual case bases but it needs to be evaluated by the member state as well. Each citizen expelled has the right to attack the decision in a national court and demand the removal of the decision.
