Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu dismisses uninominal voting system on his blog
Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu writes on his blog that the uninominal voting system is practiced in countries run by authoritarian regimes or with two-party systems (like the US or England).
As Romania discusses the reform of the voting system, with two major plans to introduce uninominal voting, Iliescu argues that there is a general lack of knowledge regarding the uninominal voting system and tries to explain his reader that the new voting system will not work.
He argues that the uninominal voting system was extensively used during the Communist regime and it clearly imposed candidates names from the center and diluted any competition.
Iliescu, a former communist official who served as President for much of Romania’s post-communist period, launched his own blog a week ago. He said that in the first 30 hours since launching his blog, it was visited by more than 30,000 people.
