Germany against inviting Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO
Just a few days before the NATO Summit, Germany pleaded against inviting Georgia and Ukraine to join the Alliance, as the German Government spokesman, Thomas Steg, declared on Friday.
The Berlin has a very reserved stance towards the US plans referring to Georgia and Ukraine’s accession, said Thomas Steg, reminding that one of the main conditions for a state to join NATO is the existence of a stable situation of the bidding state.
NATO can not accept countries where the interior political conflicts are not put to rest, said Steg. The same thing goes for countries in conflict or crisis areas. For these reasons, the German Government sees as inopportune the negotiations with the two countries.
Germany, France and Italy are the main opponents of such a step, since the Ukraine populace does not support the accession to NATO, while Georgia has not solved yet its frozen conflicts with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
