Accused of bribe taking and detained by anti-graft prosecutors for 29 days in a major scandal shaking Romanian football industry, Gheorghe Constantin has resigned as head of the Central Commission of Referees which oversees the activity of football referees in the country. According to anti-graft prosecutors, Constantin is investigated for two presumed felonies of bribe taking.,

Cornel Penescu, FC Arges football club owner, sent in two installments 290,000 Lei to Constantin Gheorghe so that the latter would delegate referees who would favor FC Arges for this season and promote a referee protected by Penescu.

After Constantin’s resignation, former Commission vice-president Marcel Lica will take over his function.
