Local mogul sued on corruption charges

The head of a district council in Moldova known for his strong links to the previous Social Democratic (PSD) government has been sent to court on graft charges related to a 2 million euro prejudice, the National Anti-Corruption Department (DNA) announced on Monday.

Marian Oprisan, who runs the District Council of the Vrancea county in Eastern Romania, is charged with abuse in office, use of credits in illegal purposes and forgery of official documents.

He is sued along with four other local officials in a case related to funds amounting to 1.9 million USD received from the Transport Ministry for construction works on roads in the Vrancea county.

According to evidence collected by the DNA, the tender commission named by Oprisan has selected offers from companies that did not meet the necessary criteria for such works – companies that were run by close cronies.

Many of the contracted works were completely ignored despite the funds have been received. while the rest were badly managed and concluded without the necessary technical projects.
