Nine countries including Romania to propose EU legislation related to divorce
Nine countries including Romania will propose a common European law to regulate divorce, diplomatic sources declared for AFP. The request was announced during a reunion of EU Justice ministers and comes after Sweden blocked any proposal on this matter.
Thus, the nine countries will propose a strengthened cooperation procedure, to simplify divorce in European Union. This procedure allows a group of states to have a legislative initiative even if not all Union members agree on this matter. At least eight states are needed in order to be able to launch the procedure.
The nine states, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Luxembourg and Greece will have to convince the Commission to approve their initiative. If approved, it will be the first time such a procedure was used.
