Reuters: European Commission postpones enlargement decisionfor September
The European Commission has postponed a decision on the date of Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the EU for September, Reuters reports.
An internal note that was circulated among European officials on Monday said the progress reported by the two counties in all fields will be evaluated by the Commission in early autumn, according to the international press agency.
The European officials discussed the issue on Monday morning and will have a new wave on consultations on Monday before the EC presents its report on the preparation of Romania and Bulgaria to join the Union.
Reuters quotes a participant to the talks who said another report will be prepared for the two countries in early October.
However, Leonard Orban, state secretary for the Romanian EU Integration Ministry, told Hotnews.ro he was sure the Tuesday report will mention a clear date – one of the three versions already discussed: 2007, 2008 or conditionally 2007, the last of which was most likely to happen.
