Romania far-right leader C.V. Tudor announces resignation from Parliament
The leader of the far-right Greater Romania Party (PRM), Corneliu Vadim Tudor, announced on Sunday evening that he would resign from the Romanian Parliament on Monday morning following the announcement of the results for the first European elections that took place in Romania. PRM received only 3.4% of the votes, well below the necessary threshold to enter the European Parliament.
Tudor said he would call a national council of the PRM this week and urge the PRM parliamentarians to follow suit and resign, unless they want to serve in the Parliament as independents.
That means that some 50 senators and deputies including Senator Tudor would have to resign.
PRM used to be one of the strongest parties in Romania until not long ago. Tudor himself reached the second round of presidential elections but was defeated by main contenter Ion Iliescu in 2000.
