Romanians in Spain sent home by 7.5% more money in 2008 compared to 2007, despite the global economic crisis while other immigrant communities reduced the sums sent to their home countries, NewsIn informs, quoting a study conducted by Spanish daily El Pais and Remesas.org.

According to the quoted study, Romanians in Spain sent home by 7.5% more money in 2008, amounting to 325 million euro compared to 303 million euro in 2007. By comparison, the sums sent, for example, by Colombians decreased by 28% in 2008 compared to the previous year.

Total sums sent home by immigrants in Spain dropped by 4%: if foreigners sent home 2.02 billion euro in 2007, in 2008 the sum dropped by 81 million euro to 1.939 billion euro. Remesas.org representative Inigo More declared that the result of the survey can by explained by the economic crisis.

According to a Soros study in February, the average annual sum sent home by Romanians in Spain is 5.100 euro. 80% of Romanian immigrants surveyed declared that they have sent a part of their revenues back home. Of these, 50% sent money regularly while 28% only occasionally.
