Serbian current President Boris Tadici was re-elected this weekend in a second round of elections that was watched by all international players. Exit polls showed on Sunday evening that Tadic defeated nationalist Tomislav Nikolic at a margin of only several percentage points, according to Reuters.

Also on Sunday evening, the central electoral commission in Belgrade, quoted by AFP, said Tadic came first. With 57% of the votes counted, Tadic received 51.16% of the votes, against 47.18% for Tadic.

The poll was seen as crucial considering the European future for Serbia and maybe the most important since the fall of the Milosevic regime in 2000.

Final results are expected by February 7 the latest. The future president will serve for a five-year term due to start when he is sworn in before the Parliament of Serbia.
