Romanian recognises the Republic of Moldova and supports the territorial integrity of the neighbouring state, incumbent President Traian Basescu declared on Thursday. „Our opinion is that, sooner or later, Moldova will become EU member”, he added.

The chief of state declared on Thursday: „Because there is a certain propaganda that does not talk in favourable terms about Romania’s intentions, I would like you to know from me, from the President of Romania, that Romania recognises the Republic of Moldova and supports the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. Our opinion is that, sooner or later, Moldova will become EU member. Until then, it is important for the democratic processes in the Republic of Moldova to consolidate.”

The declaration was made in Sulina (South-East), on launching ARC Programme, 2009 – a holiday camp scheme for Romanian children from all over the world.

He indicated that, 20 years ago, Romania „was having problems in understanding minorities’ culture and their rights”.

According to Basescu, Romania has got now one of the most modern legislations from the European Union because „we learnt that living in Europe means respecting everyone”. Basescu said he was impressed by the „strength and will” of the Romanian children in other countries to learn the language of their origin.

I’ve seen a more or less violent chase of your desire to preserve your language, I saw what happened in some schools in Transnistria„, he went on to say. He concluded by thanking the children, their families and teachers.
