UN flood toll differs from Romanian add-up

The flood tat hit Northern Romania, Ukraine and Moldova caused the death of 42 and the eviction of 40,000 people, the United Nations announced. According to the UN toll, Romania counted 5 victims, 10,520 evicted persons and 8,941 affected households. The numbers at the Romanian Interior Ministry indicate only 5,595 affected households, out of which 1,500 require total reconstruction.

The flood in Romania was the worst in 40 years, the UN Humanitarian Coordination Office spokesperson, Elisabeth Byrs, said.

Technical evaluation teams are still in the field, in order to make an inventory of the agriculture terrain and social and cultural assets, Interior Minister Cristian David said in a press conference on Wednesday. A complete picture of the damage will be available next week.
