US calls Romania and Republic of Moldova to sign border treaty

HotNews.ro

US authorities have intervened in the tense relations between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, according to Russian newspaper Nezavissimaya Gazeta, which quotes US deputy Secretary of State on democracy and human rights David Kramer calling the parties on a Chisinau TV show to show signs of political will and eventually sign the treaty on the border separating the two countries.

According to the paper, the difficulty here stands in the fact that by signing the treaty Bucharest authorities would put an end to the issue of a possible unification of the two countries. The paper also insists that Moldova President Vladimir Voronin has been pushing EU leaders to press Romania on the subject of the „sister states”.

That comes as Romanian President Traian Basescu has been repeatedly spoken, according to the paper, about „two Romanian states” and challenged the existence of the Moldovan language – which has been proclaimed by President Voronin.
