Violence in Belgrade and Mitrovica as Kosovo declares independence (VIDEO)
Serb protesters threw stones at the US Embassy to Belgrade on Sunday evening hours after the authorities in Kosovo declared the independence of the province, which the United States had said it backed, international news organizations announced. In the capital of Serbia, some two thousand protesters shouting patriotic slogans gathered before the US Embassy and broke some of its windows with stones.
The building was defended by several hundred police in riot gear. Traffic in the area was blocked.
The buildings hosting representation offices for the European Union and the United Nations in the city of Mitrovica, northern Kosovo, where a considerable Serbian population lives, were reportedly attacked and evacuated.
No victims or important damages were reported by 8.00 p.m. on Sunday.
The UN Security Council was due to decide on a position in reaction the the declaration of independence in Kosovo, which permanent Council member Russia has already condemned.
