EC about expelling gipsy deliquents: expulsions should not be rushed
After the decision of the French government to intensify its expulsion policy of gipsy fellons in Romania and Bulgaria, the European Commission warns that in such cases, governments should act with precaution. Matthew Newman, spokesperson of the EC Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding declared for RFI that freedom of movement is a European right which both Bulgarian and Romanian citizens enjoy.
He underlined that a 2004 EC directive establishes the steps that should be taken in cases of expulsion and these should not be rushed.
