Lithuania demands Russia USD 28 billion compensation for Soviet occupation
Rusia must admit the Soviet occupation of Lithuania and pay the damages incurred, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus has told radio station Echo Moskvy. The total compensation for the Soviet occupation should amount to 28 billion USD, Lithuanian authorities claim.
The value of the compensation was computed along with some experts a couple of years ago, the Finance.ua website informs. Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted the act of Soviet army entering Lithuania. Russia says its official position on the issue is stipulated in the treaty co-signed by the two countries in 1991, the website adds.
Meanwhile, Putin refused to admit the occupation of the Baltic region in 1945, as Lithuania had demanded before the opening in Moscow of festivities related to the 60th anniversary of the Russian victory against the Nazis, reasoning that Russia could not occupy something it had held since 1939.
