Switzerland officially joins Schengen space

Switzerland and the European Union suspended the identity verifications at ground borders on Thursday, the day Switzerland officially joined the Schengen space. The verification in airports will be eliminated in March 2009.

Swiss custom officers will continue to be present at borders and may conduct verifications at any moment.

Switzerland risks to be eliminated from the Schengen space in case it doesn’t expand the free movement right to Romanian and Bulgarian citizens.
