Foreign media: New Romanian Government – many former minister, few reformists

HotNews.ro

The new Government in Bucharest, installed after two years of political blockage, includes 11 former ministers, but very few reformists. Still, it brings hope for political stability, although the dilemma of choosing between austerity and social policies threatens the perspective of efficient anti crisis measures, foreign media comment, quoted by NewsIn.

The new centrist – leftist coalition sworn in on Monday, giving hope for fast political decisions aimed against the financial crisis in this poor state of the European Union, Reuters comments, mentioning that the coalition brings together former adversaries that obtained equal scores after the elections in November: centrist PDL (Democrat Liberals) and Social Democrats (PSD) who inherited the Communist leaders and are stained by corruption scandals.

The new Government, Reuters comments, is an impulse towards political stability, in a moment when the economy slows down and economists warn that the lack of cash could make Romania unable to finance its huge commercial deficit. The political blockage of the last two years left Romania more vulnerable than many of its more developed neighbors in Southern Europe, economists say.

The history of conflict between the two parties also threatens the new cabinet’s capacity to agree on drastic public expenses cuts and to re-launch the anti graft campaign. Analysis consider that the anti crisis measure may send to the shadows the anti graft campaign for a while.
