Mihai Ghimpu: Romanians will be able to travel without a visa starting this week

HotNews.ro

Moldovan interim President Mihai Ghimpu declared for RFI Romania to suspend the decision of the government ruling that Romanians need visas to enter the Republic of Moldova. Most probably, visa requirements will be waived by Friday this week, the latest, Ghimpu said.

Considering that the Parliament has no right to void the government’s decision, I will use my Constitutional right and as interim President I will void the government’s decision, Ghimpu explained. Most probably, Romanians will be able to enter Moldova without a visa Saturday or Sunday. The measure will be implemented immediately.

Former Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin decided to introduce visas for Romanian citizens after the protests on April 2009, shortly after Parliamentary elections which drove people on the streets. The measure was criticized by several European officials who urged Moldova to rethink its decision.
