Moldavian Interior minister gave Romanian Foreign Affairs minister a piece of barbed wire that used to be part of the border fence between the two countries

Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Baconschi received a piece of barbed wire from the Moldavian Interior minister Victor Catan. The piece used to be part of the fence stretched along the border of the two countries on the Prut river. Moldova removed the barbed wire fence in February during a ceremony. Moldavian Prime-Minister Vlad Filat and Romanian Administration and Interior minister Vasile Blaga cut the first pieces.

Catan declared that the barbed-wire had been cut „at the end of a long separation process”, while a visibly touched Baconschi stated that „we managed to dismantle this barbed-wire network, too”. The Romanian minister said he will keep the gift and look at it as a symbol „of a past which we do not want to return”.

Approximately 20 cm of barbed-wire have been framed and offered to the Romanian Foreign Affairs minister. Interior minister Vasile Blaga received a similar gift yesterday.

The barbed-wire fence on the Prut river border has been removed by the Moldavian authorities. The first barbed-wire exchange took place in February, when Moldavian PM Vlad Filat and Romanian Interior minister Vasile Blaga and cut the red tape at the border pass Radauti Prut-Lipscani, which has been closed for 60 years.

The fence was 360 kilometres long. The Moldavian authorities in Chisinau said they will melt it and use it to build bridges to unite the two Prut banks and the two countries.
