UPDATE: Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin to resign next week

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin resigned, Jurnal.md informs, quoting unofficial sources. Ex-Vice Deputy of the Moldovan Parliament, Vladimir Turcan denied the information, at the request of HotNews.ro correspondent to Chisinau.

UPDATE: Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin announced the Communist Party, on Wednesday, that he will resign next week, Reuters informs, quoting a source who attended the meeting. Voronin said that he will resign next week, since he is unable to be both President and member of the Parliament, the source said.

Russian journalists confirm this information, quoted by Jurnal.md, that Voronin announced his resignation and that he will announce it officially next week. Unofficial sources declared that Voronin will announce his resignation on September 12.

Initially, Moldovan news agency Omega.md announced that Voronin resigned today but it deleted the information from its website.

A representative of the party declared that the information is not true, but that the possibility is not excluded. Sergiu Sarbu declared for Jurnal.md that the procedure is too complex and it takes a while but nonetheless, that it is not excluded.

According to the Moldovan Constitution, if the President resigns, the Parliament’s Speaker occupies the position, on a temporary basis. Currently, Liberal Mihai Ghimpu occupies this function in the Parliament.
