Broadband Internet penetration doubles, wired telephony on slight growth
The number of connections to the Internet reached 5.8 million in 2007, representing a 76% growth, compared to 2006. Out of these, the number of dedicated broadband connections – dial up and mobile access – reached 2.1 million, double than in 2007, the data at the National Authority for Communication Regulations (ANRCTI) indicates.
Also in 2007, the total number of wired telephony lines increased 1.4%, up to 4.226 million lines, 1.2 million lines belonging to alternative operators. The newcomers on the market already gained a 29% share of the market, after a 50% growth in 2007.
The largest growth in telecomm was in broadband connections via the new xDSL technology – 270%.
At the end of 2007, the penetration rate of mobile telephony services (active SIM cards per 100 inhabitants) reached 106.2%, with 22.9 million users. Statistical data indicate 67% prepaid SIM cards and 33% (7.5 million) monthly payment subscribers. The number of subscribers decreased constantly during the past years, from 36.1% in 2004 to 35.8% in 2005 and 33.9% in 2006.
