The Government is changing the Labor Code so that Romanians find better paid work more easily, Romanian PM Emil Boc said on Monday. The Government adopted a series of changes to the Labor code and sent them to Parliament to set a date when it would assume responsibility over the bill. „If one does his job and performs well, the law will protect him”, Boc said.

He said that with a new code the labor market would be more flexible and sanctions for black market labor would be harsher.

He presented a series of details on what the proposed code regulates:

  • more flexibility regarding the determined period working contracts, while the overall rule says the permanent contracts are to be preferred
  • the period for determined period working contracts is extended from 24 to 36 months. Such contracts may be prolonged by written agreements of all parties
  • several working contracts can be signed. those looking for a second job would find it more easily
  • the normal duration of the working day is of up to 8 hours in average
  • the maximum duration of weekly work cannot exceed 48 hours including supplementary hours
  • signing a working contract establishes the performance criteria and objectives for a certain job. If one does his job well, one will be protected by law
  • doing night shifts allows for a better pay in certain circumstances
  • sanctions for black market labor are set in accordance with the gravity of the cases
  • the new code does not abandon collective working contracts – those who say otherwise are wrong
