Communist Party leaders not to be taken as Securitate collaborators by default

The Judicial Commission of the Romanian Senate rejected on Wednesday an amendment to the law establishing the political police status of the Securitate, the main intelligence service under the communist regime. The amendment said all people with leading positions within the Communist Party should be automatically considered collaborators of the Securitate.

The amendment was initiated by Hungarian Democrat Senator Peter Eckstein Kovacs but was rejected with by the votes of the two opposition parties in the Parliament, the far-right Greater Romania Party and the Social Democratic Party.
