Survey puts Democrats first, Liberals last in race for elections

The main backers of Romanian President Traian Basescu, the Democratic Party (PD) would get 42% of the vote if parliamentary elections would take place next Sunday, followed by the main opposition party, the Social Democrats (PSD) with 19% and the governing Liberals, with 13%, according to a study by Romanian pollster INSOMAR.

While the populist New Generation Party (PNG), the far-right Greater Romania Party (PRM) and the Hungarian Demcrats (UDMR) would reach the 5% threshold to enter Parliament, the Conservatives (PC) and Liberal Democrats (PLD) would fail to, reveals INSOMAR, quoted by Romanian monitoring agency Rador.

PNG, a party led by populist businessman-politician Gigi Becali, owner of Steaua Bucharest football club, loses considerable ground from previous polls, a trend blamed on recent scandals between Becali and ex-Steaua coach Gica Hagi that have split the public opinion in the country.

When it comes to trust in politicians, Romanian President Traian Basescu enjoys a 53% level of trust, followed by Theodor Stolojan with 30%, Gigi Becali with 25%, Democratic Party leader Emil Boc with 24% and Romanian PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu with 22%.

About 73% of the respondents declared that they had no idea when political parties would announce their representatives for the European Parliamentary elections.
