Bulgaria plans to register raki as a national drink in the EU

Bulgaria will try to register raki as a national drink at the EU level in an attempt tp diminish taxes and limit illegal production, Novinite.com reads. The procedure was discussed with the Finance ministry and is currently at the Economic ministry for analysis.

The measure could have benficial effects for local producers and the state’s budget, despite the national significance. First of all, if the raki is registered, Bulgaria will be able to tax it and on the other hand, it could limit illegal production and increase revenues to the state.

According to data, there are 1,100 licensed producers while the real number amounts to 20,000.
