Cheap Romanian labor sparks scandal in France

Some 60 French workers at a textile factory in the town of Tour du Pin protested on Friday against a management decision to close the factory and move production to Romania, French TV station France 3 has announced. It was the second such protest that day after another one reported at a coffee machines factory in Italy.

According to French trade unions, the owner of the Tour du Pin unit, Swiss group Sefar-Fyltis, decided to move production to Romania because of big differences between the salaries of French workers and those claimed by Romanian ones.

A French workers’ representative told the TV station that while the factory was making a good profit, the owners wanted to move production because a Romanian workers would accept as low as 100 euro, compared to salaries of 1,100 in France.
